PCBE is envisioned as an integrated ecosystem, supporting the whole experimental pathway: <strong data-start=\"512\" data-end=\"659\">sample preparation \u2192 omics analysis \u2192 molecular validation \u2192 cell validation \u2192 cell experiments \u2192 imaging and phenotyping \u2192 sequencing and microbial analysis.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"vl58re\" data-start=\"200\" data-end=\"275\">First floor &#8211; Environmental analysis, analytical chemistry and eco-technological processes<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"842\">The first floor of the Research Platform in Systems Biology and Ecology (PCBE) is dedicated to <strong data-start=\"367\" data-end=\"420\">advanced chemical analysis of environmental samples<\/strong>, development of <strong data-start=\"437\" data-end=\"464\">eco-technological processes<\/strong> and detailed characterization of organic and inorganic compounds in ecosystems. The infrastructure supports interdisciplinary research at the interface between biology, chemistry and environmental science, providing a complete experimental framework &#8211; from sample preparation and extraction to molecular identification and assessment of remedial processes. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"842\">The platform includes high-performance systems for <strong data-start=\"889\" data-end=\"924\">elemental and isotopic analysis<\/strong> used to study food webs, identify energy sources in ecosystems and investigate biogeochemical cycles. Determination of total, organic or inorganic carbon in liquid and solid samples is performed by dedicated analyzers, essential for monitoring the quality of water, soil and sediment. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"842\">For the characterization of contaminants and low molecular weight biomolecules, the floor has a complex <strong data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1457\">liquid and gas chromatography<\/strong> infrastructure, coupled with mass spectrometric detection or specific detectors (fluorescence, conductivity, UV-DAD, RI). These systems allow the identification and quantification of xenobiotic compounds, such as pesticides or pharmaceuticals, as well as the analysis of hydrocarbons, carbohydrates or volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds. In addition, an automated <strong data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1848\">gel permeation<\/strong> system facilitates sample purification and concentration prior to chromatographic analysis.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"842\">The structural and functional characterization of biological materials and samples is supported by modern spectroscopic techniques such as <strong data-start=\"2109\" data-end=\"2132\">FT-IR spectroscopy<\/strong> and UV-VIS spectrophotometry, including monitoring of chemical or enzymatic reactions under controlled conditions. The platform also includes solutions for <strong data-start=\"2279\" data-end=\"2315\">accelerated solvent extraction<\/strong>, useful in the recovery of organic compounds from complex solid matrices.A distinctive component of the floor is dedicated to <strong data-start=\"2476\" data-end=\"2545\">the development and testing of water treatment and purification processes<\/strong>, including experimental facilities with catalytic reactors and modular membrane systems, as well as equipment for advanced ozone-based oxidation processes. These allow the simulation of real remediation conditions and the optimization of pollution abatement technologies in aquatic environments.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"842\">In the biotechnology and applied microbiology area, the floor is equipped with <strong data-start=\"2954\" data-end=\"2983\">laboratory bioreactors<\/strong>, incubators, centrifuges and thermal control systems, which support microbial cultivation and small and medium-scale experiments. Oxidative analyses and studies on reactive species are facilitated by a dedicated chemiluminometer, and the investigation of cellular processes is complemented by fluorescence microscopy. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"842\">Experimental activities are supported by an extensive ancillary infrastructure (rotaevaporators, ultrapure water systems, analytical balances, vacuum installations, ultrasonic homogenization), as well as <strong data-start=\"3543\" data-end=\"3567\">field equipment<\/strong> for ecosystem monitoring &#8211; from leaf area index and physico-chemical water parameters to plankton, sediment and ichthyofauna studies. The first floor thus directly links laboratory research with <strong data-start=\"3870\" data-end=\"3881\">in situ<\/strong> observations and measurements, providing an integrated perspective on the functioning of natural systems. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"842\">More technical details are available <a href=\"https:\/\/bio.unibuc.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1.-Echipamente_RO.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"784\">Second floor &#8211; Genomics, transcriptomics and platforms for molecular analysis<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"1317\">The second floor houses the <strong data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"857\">molecular biology and omics<\/strong> core, built around a <strong data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"912\">BS2+ (ISO8) clean room<\/strong> of approximately <strong data-start=\"928\" data-end=\"937\">55 m\u00b2<\/strong>, partitioned into three dedicated areas (nucleic acid extraction, mix preparation and coupling) to ensure rigorous workflows and contamination control. The space is equipped with high-efficiency <strong data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1155\">laminar flow hoods<\/strong> (H14), providing optimal conditions for working with DNA\/RNA and for preparing amplification reactions. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"1317\">The analytical capability is complemented by equipment for nucleic acid <strong data-start=\"1379\" data-end=\"1419\">quantification and quality control<\/strong> (UV-VIS spectrophotometry and integrity analysis), as well as a fleet of thermocyclers and Real-Time PCR systems, which allow both routine experiments and sensitive quantitative and multiplex analysis. For the separation and documentation of nucleic acids, the floor includes <strong data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1741\">electrophoresis<\/strong> systems and a <strong data-start=\"1748\" data-end=\"1778\">UV-VIS image analyzer<\/strong> compatible with a wide range of fluorescent dyes. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"1317\">In addition, the infrastructure supports cutting-edge research through <strong data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"1954\">Single-Cell<\/strong> technology (single-cell isolation\/processing, reverse transcription and pre-amplification) and a <strong data-start=\"2049\" data-end=\"2063\">microarray<\/strong> platform for applications such as gene expression, CGH, microRNA, DNA methylation or ChIP. The genetic analysis and sequencing component is supported by a <strong data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2238\">capillary genetic analyzer<\/strong> for fragment sequencing and a <strong data-start=\"2299\" data-end=\"2310\">PGM Ion<\/strong> Sequencing System (NGS), including for metagenomic evaluations on the 16S rRNA marker. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"1317\">More technical details are available <a href=\"https:\/\/bio.unibuc.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2.-Echipamente_RO.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2422\" data-end=\"2490\">Third floor &#8211; Cell biology, proteomics and advanced phenotyping<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"3100\">The third floor is dedicated to experimental research in <strong data-start=\"2543\" data-end=\"2564\">cell biology<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2580\">imaging<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2584\" data-end=\"2598\">phenotyping<\/strong>, offering working conditions compliant with biosafety standards. The centerpiece is a <strong data-start=\"2687\" data-end=\"2715\">cell culture area<\/strong> organized as a <strong data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2756\">BS2+ (ISO8) clean room<\/strong>, with two distinct areas: one for <strong data-start=\"2793\" data-end=\"2811\">cell lines<\/strong> and one for <strong data-start=\"2826\" data-end=\"2845\">primary cultures<\/strong>. Covering approximately <strong data-start=\"2877\" data-end=\"2886\">72 m\u00b2<\/strong>, the infrastructure includes <strong data-start=\"2911\" data-end=\"2944\">class II biosafety hoods<\/strong>, CO\u2082 incubators and ancillary equipment for handling and maintaining biological samples under controlled conditions.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"3100\">For functional analysis and exploration of cellular mechanisms, the floor features a <strong data-start=\"3187\" data-end=\"3228\">Nikon A1\/A1R laser confocal microscope<\/strong> (point-scan, multi-channel spectral detector) capable of delivering high-resolution imaging and fast acquisition &#8211; an essential tool in subcellular localization studies, colocalization, cell dynamics and 3D analysis. For screening and spectral measurements, UV\/VIS systems and multimode readers are available, useful in cell biology, biochemistry and molecular interaction assays. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"3100\">The third floor also supports complete <strong data-start=\"3736\" data-end=\"3769\">electrophoresis and Western blot<\/strong> workflows (including rapid transfer), plus modern gel and membrane imaging systems (including infrared detection), providing a robust framework for protein validations. For the preparation of biological samples, <strong data-start=\"4006\" data-end=\"4018\">sonication<\/strong> solutions (direct and indirect) are integrated, and for long-term studies under physiological conditions, an automated inverted microscope enables <strong data-start=\"4143\" data-end=\"4164\">live-cell imaging<\/strong> in CO\u2082 incubation. Complementarily, a flow cytometer with multiple lasers and detectors provides <strong data-start=\"4257\" data-end=\"4285\">multiparametric analyses<\/strong> for immunophenotyping, cell cycle, viability, marker expression and population characterization.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"3100\">More technical details are available <a href=\"https:\/\/bio.unibuc.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/3.-Echipamente_RO.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4435\" data-end=\"4516\">Stage IV &#8211; Next-generation NGS sequencing, bioprocessing and microbiology<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4517\" data-end=\"5140\">Stage IV extends the capabilities of PCBE to <strong data-start=\"4561\" data-end=\"4587\">large-scale genomics<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4589\" data-end=\"4606\">microbiology<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4610\" data-end=\"4626\">bioprocessing<\/strong>, being the meeting point between fundamental research and applications with biomedical and environmental relevance. The sequencing component includes an <strong data-start=\"4785\" data-end=\"4803\">Illumina MiSeq<\/strong> platform, suitable for targeted amplicons (e.g. 16S\/ITS), small bacterial\/viral genomes and shallow metagenomics, as well as an <strong data-start=\"4944\" data-end=\"4970\">Oxford Nanopore MinION<\/strong> system for long reads, real-time sequencing and applications such as metagenomics, plasmids, amplicons or direct RNA sequencing. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4517\" data-end=\"5140\">For high-volume data-intensive projects and complex omics applications, the floor is equipped with <strong data-start=\"5247\" data-end=\"5261\">PromethION<\/strong> sequencers, which offer high throughput and flexibility for large-scale genomic, transcriptomic and epigenetic projects. In the bioprocessing area, a <strong data-start=\"5412\" data-end=\"5441\">4 L bench-top bioreactor<\/strong> allows for aerobic\/anaerobic cultures and fermentations with digital monitoring and control, supporting both process optimizations and experimental studies on microbial physiology or microbial-environment interactions. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4517\" data-end=\"5140\">The fourth floor also includes a <strong data-start=\"5722\" data-end=\"5752\">microbiology platform<\/strong> for research activities with non-pathogenic microorganisms, with basic infrastructure for cultivation, preservation and analysis (incubators, ultrapure water, laminar flow hoods, spectrophotometry, centrifugation, microscopy).
